Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming part of mental health care—and many people with ADHD are starting to wonder if it could help them manage focus, organization, and daily overwhelm.

            The answer is:

AI can be helpful—but it has clear limitations, especially with ADHD.

On the positive side, AI tools are uniquely suited to some of the core challenges of ADHD. Many individuals with ADHD struggle with consistency, structure, and follow-through. AI can provide immediate support in moments where those challenges show up—whether that’s helping break down tasks, setting reminders, or offering real-time prompts to stay on track.

Early research suggests this type of support can be beneficial. A study published in

However, AI is not a replacement for proper ADHD care.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, motivation, and executive functioning at a biological level. While AI can assist with surface-level behaviors, it does not diagnose, treat underlying causes, or adjust care based on clinical judgment.

emphasizes that effective ADHD treatment often includes a combination of clinical evaluation, medication when appropriate, and structured behavioral strategies tailored to the individual (NIMH, 2024). These are areas where human providers play a critical role.

There are also important limitations to consider. AI tools tend to be reactive rather than proactive. They respond to input—but they don’t always recognize patterns over time, challenge ineffective habits, or adapt in the way a trained clinician can. For individuals with ADHD, who often benefit from accountability and personalized adjustments, this can limit long-term progress.

           So where does AI fit?

At the end of the day, AI has the potential to make managing ADHD more accessible and consistent—but it works best when combined with real clinical care.

What ADHD Treatment Really Looks Like (From the Outside)

When someone you love is diagnosed with ADHD, it can bring a mix of emotions: relief, confusion, hope, and sometimes skepticism.

When someone you love is diagnosed with ADHD, it can bring a mix of emotions: relief, confusion, hope, and sometimes skepticism. Many family members and friends expect treatment to create an immediate transformation — better focus, better organization, better motivation, and fewer struggles.

But ADHD treatment usually doesn’t look like a sudden personality change. It looks like steady progress — and often, subtle shifts that matter more than people realize.

ADHD treatment isn’t just “trying harder”

ADHD is not a character flaw or a lack of willpower. It is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, emotional regulation, and executive functioning. The American Psychiatric Association describes ADHD as a disorder that can significantly impact functioning across school, work, and relationships. (APA, DSM-5-TR, 2022)

That means treatment isn’t about pushing someone to “get it together.” It’s about giving them tools and supports that actually work with their brain.

What treatment may look like to family and friends

From the outside, ADHD treatment often shows up in real-life improvements like:

Fewer forgotten appointments and missed deadlines

            More consistent follow-through on tasks

Better emotional control (less snapping, less overwhelm)

            Improved communication in relationships

Better time awareness (less rushing, less chronic lateness)

            More confidence and less shame

            Reduced procrastination and avoidance

And sometimes, treatment looks like something even simpler: they start believing they’re not broken.

           Medication is only one part

Many people assume ADHD treatment is “just stimulants.” Medication can be extremely helpful, but best-practice care often includes a combination of:

            A thorough diagnostic evaluation

            Medication management when appropriate

            Skills coaching and behavioral strategies

Therapy for anxiety, depression, or trauma (which commonly overlap)

Support with routines, sleep, and lifestyle habits

The CDC notes that effective ADHD treatment often includes behavior therapy and/or medication, depending on age, symptoms, and functional impairment. (CDC, 2024)

Treatment isn’t always smooth at first

Families sometimes get discouraged early in the process. It can take time to find the right medication, the right dose, or the right approach. Some people feel emotional during the first few weeks — not because treatment is failing, but because they’re finally seeing their struggles clearly, sometimes for the first time.

           That emotional adjustment is normal.

How friends and family can support treatment

The most powerful thing loved ones can do is reduce shame and increase support:

            Notice effort, not just outcomes

Avoid calling them lazy or careless

Help with structure (gentle reminders, shared calendars)

            Encourage follow-up appointments

Understand that “small wins” are huge in ADHD recovery

           The real goal

ADHD treatment isn’t about turning someone into a different person. It’s about helping them become more consistent, more confident, and more in control of their life.

At The ADD Clinic, we believe ADHD care is about restoring momentum — and helping patients build a life that finally feels manageable.

New Year’s resolutions can be especially challenging for individuals with ADD or ADHD. While the intention to “do better” or “be more organized” is common, traditional resolution frameworks often rely on consistency, long-term planning, and sustained motivation—areas that ADHD directly affects. Understanding this difference is key to setting goals that support mental health rather than undermine it.

ADHD is not a lack of effort or willpower; it is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts executive functioning, including planning, task initiation, time management, and emotional regulation. The American Psychiatric Association emphasizes that ADHD symptoms persist into adulthood for many individuals and often fluctuate based on stress, sleep, and environmental demands. Expecting rigid, year-long resolutions can unintentionally reinforce shame when goals aren’t met perfectly.

A more effective approach is to replace outcome-based resolutions with systems-based intentions. Instead of “I will be more productive,” an ADHD-informed resolution might be “I will use external supports to reduce mental load,” such as calendar reminders, visual task lists, or accountability check-ins. These strategies work with the ADHD brain rather than against it.

Another important shift is shortening the time horizon. Many people with ADHD experience difficulty connecting present actions to distant future rewards. Breaking goals into weekly or even daily focus points can significantly improve follow-through. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, environmental structure and routine play a major role in managing ADHD symptoms, often as much as internal motivation.

Mental health resolutions for ADHD should also include self-compassion. ADHD is associated with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout, often due to years of feeling “behind” or misunderstood. Choosing goals that prioritize rest, emotional regulation, and realistic expectations can reduce this cycle. For some individuals, seeking professional evaluation, medication management, or therapy may be one of the most impactful resolutions they can make.

As the new year begins, consider reframing resolutions not as proof of discipline, but as experiments in support. ADHD-friendly goals are flexible, adaptive, and responsive to real life. Progress may not look linear—but sustainable change often starts with understanding how your brain works and building systems that help it succeed.

October is ADHD Awareness Month: Why Testing and Treatment Matter

October is ADHD Awareness Month, a national campaign led by the ADHD Awareness Month Coalition with partners such as CHADD and ADDA. The goal is simple and urgent: replace myths with facts and help more people get timely, evidence-based care.

           What ADHD is—and isn’t.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, working memory, organization, and impulse control. It often begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood, shaping how we learn, work, and relate to others. Many adults recognize symptoms only later in life—sometimes after a child in the family is evaluated. Authoritative public-health sources (CDC, NIMH) emphasize that ADHD is common and treatable.

Why a real evaluation (“testing”) matters.

An ADHD assessment is more than a quick checklist. Best practice includes a thorough clinical history across settings (home/school/work), validated rating scales from multiple informants, and careful screening for conditions that can mimic or co-occur with ADHD (anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, learning differences). For children and adolescents, the American Academy of Pediatrics provides detailed guidance on diagnosis and treatment. Adults benefit from a similarly comprehensive approach adapted to work and home demands.

           Treatment works

—and it’s not one-size-fits-all. Evidence-based options include behavior therapy/coaching, skills-based psychotherapy (e.g., CBT for ADHD), school or workplace accommodations, and medications (stimulant and non-stimulant). Care plans are individualized and often combine strategies for the best results. Public-health guidance from the CDC and NIMH underscores that treatment can reduce symptoms and improve functioning across the lifespan.

October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month: What Patients Can Do Right Now

October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to name the problem and connect people to help. Domestic violence (intimate partner violence, or IPV) includes patterns of physical harm, sexual violence, stalking, or psychological aggression. It affects millions and carries serious health consequences—from injuries to depression, PTSD, and chronic disease. The CDC’s national data underscore the scope and impact.

Health care teams have a role, too. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends clinicians screen women of reproductive age (including during pregnancy and postpartum) for IPV and connect people who screen positive to services—an evidence-based step shown to improve safety and well-being.

If you are concerned about your safety—or are supporting someone who is—consider these actions:

Talk to a clinician you trust.

You can say, “I’m not sure I’m safe at home.” Your provider can screen confidentially, document injuries, and refer you to advocates and legal resources. (If using a shared phone/portal, ask about private contact methods.)

            Create a safety plan.

Identify safe rooms/exits, pack a small “go bag” (IDs, medications, keys, cash, copies of important documents), and choose a code word with a friend to signal you need help.

            Use confidential help lines.

            Protect your digital trail.

Use a device your partner can’t access if possible. Clear browser histories, use private browsing, and consider a new email for communications with advocates or clinicians.

            Know emergency options.

If you fear immediate harm, call 911. Ask about protective orders, victim advocacy, and medical forensic exams where applicable.

If you’re a friend or colleague

: Believe them, avoid blaming questions, offer rides/childcare, and help gather essentials. Safety—and the survivor’s choices—come first.

Domestic violence is common, serious, and preventable. Screening and support save lives, and confidential resources are available even if you’re not ready to leave. You are not alone.

A new national report from Mental Health America places Idaho 48th overall for mental health, reflecting a combination of high need and limited access to care. The ranking comes from MHA’s annual State of Mental Health in America analysis, which aggregates 17 indicators spanning prevalence, insurance coverage, youth depression, and provider availability.

Rankings are not destiny—but they do spotlight gaps Idahoans experience every day: long waitlists, workforce shortages, and rural access hurdles. MHA’s framework helps explain why states can fall behind even when communities work hard: it measures both how many people are struggling and how easy it is to get timely, affordable care.

If you or someone you love needs support, here are practical steps you can take today:

            Start with one conversation.

Talk to your primary care clinician about mood, sleep, anxiety, or substance use. Ask for a screening (PHQ-9 for depression, GAD-7 for anxiety) and referrals that fit your location and insurance.

            Use fast, free crisis support.

Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. They can de-escalate, connect you to local resources, and advise loved ones on how to help.

            Ask for access options.

Many practices can shorten waits with telehealth, group therapy, collaborative care (therapy + meds coordinated with your PCP), or interim check-ins with nurses/behavioral health coaches.

            Clarify coverage.

Contact your health plan for in-network therapists and psychiatrists; ask about telehealth, out-of-network benefits, and any cost-sharing. If you’re uninsured or underinsured, request sliding-scale or charity rates from clinics.

Tell a friend or family member, or connect with community groups and faith communities. Bring someone to appointments if that feels helpful.

            Keep a simple plan.

Write down your top 3 coping tools (walk, breathe, call a friend), your provider’s number, and 988. Put it in your phone notes.

Idaho’s ranking is a call to action—for policymakers and health systems, yes, but also for each of us to normalize care-seeking and help one another navigate to support. When people get the right care at the right time, outcomes improve—and so do communities.

Every September, communities across the country come together for National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and encouraging open conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. In 2022 alone, more than 49,000 Americans died by suicide (

By learning the warning signs, reaching out to loved ones, and connecting people to help, we can save lives.

Know the warning signs: Talking about wanting to die, withdrawing from friends, changes in mood or behavior, or increased use of alcohol or drugs are all potential warning signs.

Check in with loved ones: If you’re worried about someone, ask how they’re feeling and listen without judgment.

Encourage professional support: Mental health treatment works. Help friends and family find a therapist, doctor, or support group.

           You’re Not Alone

If you or someone you care about is struggling, there is help and hope. Talking about suicidal thoughts does not make things worse—listening and showing support can be lifesaving.

When School Starts Again: The Hidden Emotional Toll on Moms

As the back-to-school season approaches, many mothers brace themselves—not just the kids. Beneath the excitement of new backpacks and first-day photos, a quieter emotional struggle often unfolds. Moms can find themselves wrestling with waves of anxiety and even depression as routines shift and children return to school.

The pull of separation anxiety isn't just a childhood phenomenon. Research shows that mothers with underlying anxiety or depression can find life transitions—like the start of school—particularly triggering. Maternal mental health is closely linked to parenting stress, and anxiety can heighten concerns about safety, performance, and social adjustment (The Independent, 2021). Moreover, maternal depression and anxiety have been shown to impact mother–child interactions and are associated with increased emotional and behavioral difficulties in children (BMC Public Health, 2024).

These challenges are not limited to mothers of young children. While postpartum depression affects roughly one in seven new mothers, with nearly half remaining undiagnosed, its effects can persist well beyond infancy (BMC Public Health, 2024). As children grow, milestones like starting school can resurface feelings of loss, inadequacy, or uncertainty.

The start of a school year also disrupts household rhythms. Homes that once thrived on all-day togetherness suddenly fall silent, and moms may find themselves second-guessing: Is my child safe? Am I doing enough? These thoughts can spiral into persistent worry or low mood, especially for those already vulnerable to anxiety or depression.

External pressures—work schedules, social comparisons on social media, and guilt over “letting go”—can compound these emotions. Even routine school events like drop-off or parent–teacher conferences can carry unexpected emotional weight, sometimes triggering tears or feelings of isolation.

           What Can Help?

           Normalize the feelings

: Recognizing that many mothers experience similar emotions can help reduce isolation.

           Reach out:

Schedule check-ins with other parents. Peer support can help regulate stress.

           Create rituals

: Daily “share your day” traditions strengthen connection and reduce anxiety.

           Seek professional help when needed

: Persistent sadness, anxiety, or functional impairment are valid reasons to speak with a healthcare provider.

Sending a child back to school may be a rite of passage for kids, but for mothers, it can be laden with emotions. Acknowledging those feelings—and treating them with care—can make all the difference in easing the transition from summer freedom to the structure of the school year.

Why ADHD Testing and Treatment Matter as the School Year Begins

As the back-to-school season approaches, many parents are focused on school supplies, schedules, and routines. But for children and teens struggling with attention, focus, or behavior regulation, it’s also the ideal time to consider evaluation for Attention-Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD / ADHD).

ADD / ADHD affects approximately 9.8% of children and adolescents in the U.S., with symptoms often becoming more noticeable or problematic during transitions—such as the return to school after summer break (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023).

These symptoms may include difficulty focusing, excessive talking or interrupting, trouble following instructions, and poor time management.

Early identification through formal ADD / ADHD testing can make a significant difference in a child’s academic and social development. Comprehensive testing typically includes clinical interviews, behavior rating scales completed by parents and teachers, and—when appropriate—computerized attention assessments or cognitive testing.

When a diagnosis is confirmed, evidence-based treatment can begin. Most treatment plans include a combination of behavioral therapy, academic accommodations (such as 504 plans or IEPs), parent coaching, and sometimes medication. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, treatment that includes both behavior therapy and, when indicated, stimulant or non-stimulant medications is the most effective approach for school-aged children (AAP, 2019).

Starting the evaluation and treatment process before school ramps up allows families, educators, and providers to collaborate on support strategies early, and preventing academic frustration and behavioral conflicts from compounding over time. It also helps ensure that any necessary accommodations are in place before performance challenges lead to lower grades or reduced self-esteem.

If you’ve noticed signs of inattention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity in your child, don’t wait. Testing and treatment during the early weeks of the school year can provide clarity, structure, and a path forward for your child to thrive—both in and out of the classroom.

While spring can be energizing for some, it may also highlight underlying attention challenges. Teachers and parents may notice students struggling to stay focused as the school year enters its final months. Adults might find their productivity dipping even with increased energy, or feel overwhelmed trying to

Spring provides a fresh opportunity to gain insight into your mental health and cognitive functioning. Testing for ADD is non-invasive and can help uncover patterns that might explain forgetfulness, distractibility, poor time management, or emotional dysregulation. Early diagnosis is key

If ADD is diagnosed, treatment options can be life-changing. These may include medication, therapy, or lifestyle changes that support structure, planning, and sustained focus. When combined with the natural benefits of spring

If you or your child struggle with attention, focus, or follow-through, spring is the perfect time to take action. Reach out to a provider, schedule an assessment, and find out whether ADD testing and treatment can make this season not just better

Daylight savings time (DST) is a widely practiced time adjustment aimed at maximizing daylight hours. However, the biannual shift can have significant implications for mental health, particularly for individuals receiving mental health care. The disruption to circadian rhythms, sleep patterns, and overall well-being necessitates that mental health professionals and patients alike prepare for the potential psychological effects.

Research has shown that sleep disturbances are directly linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation (Harrison, 2013). Mental health care providers often see an uptick in symptoms among individuals with pre-existing conditions following the transition.

The fall transition into standard time results in shorter daylight hours, exacerbating symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs cyclically with seasonal changes. The abrupt reduction in natural light exposure can lead to increased lethargy, decreased motivation, and mood imbalances. A study by Wehr et al. (2001) found that individuals affected by SAD are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of DST. For patients prone to seasonal depression, mental health practitioners often recommend light therapy, adjusted medication schedules, and structured daily routines to mitigate these effects.

Mental health care providers may also notice changes in patient engagement and treatment effectiveness during the DST transition. Sleep disruptions can decrease cognitive function, making it harder for patients to engage in therapy, retain information, and adhere to treatment plans. Additionally, the loss of daylight hours in the evening can reduce opportunities for outdoor activities, social interactions, and exercise

To counteract the negative effects of DST, mental health professionals suggest several strategies:

Gradually adjusting sleep schedules a few days before the time change

Prioritizing natural light exposure during daylight hours

Maintaining consistent routines to support emotional stability

Encouraging patients to track their mood and symptoms for early intervention

As research continues to highlight the mental health impacts of DST, mental health professionals must take proactive steps to support their patients through these transitions.

Understanding Overlapping Symptoms: Why Testing, Diagnosis, and Treatment Still Matter

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) rarely exists in isolation. Many individuals with ADD experience co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Overlapping symptoms can sometimes make it challenging to identify the root cause of difficulties in daily life. However, just because symptoms seem to blend together does not mean proper diagnosis and treatment should be overlooked. In fact, comprehensive testing is more important than ever for effective care.

           Why Do Symptoms Overlap?

The brain is complex, and many mental health conditions share common traits. For example, both ADD and anxiety can lead to difficulty focusing. Depression and ADD can both contribute to low motivation. Sensory sensitivities seen in ASD may also be present in individuals with ADD. Without thorough testing, it

s easy to misattribute symptoms to the wrong condition or miss an important underlying issue.

A study published in The Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry found that up to 40% of individuals with ADD also have an anxiety disorder, and nearly 30% experience depression (Pliszka, 2015). These statistics highlight why a nuanced approach to diagnosis is critical. Treating one condition while ignoring another can result in incomplete relief or worsening symptoms.

Even if symptoms seem obvious, a detailed evaluation by a professional can clarify the full picture. Professional testing and assessments help distinguish between overlapping conditions and guide personalized treatment plans. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasizes that ADD should not be diagnosed based on symptoms alone but through comprehensive evaluations, including input from parents, teachers, and clinicians (Wolraich et al., 2019).

Accurate diagnosis matters because treatment approaches can vary widely. A child with ADD and anxiety may need a different medication or therapy strategy than a child with ADD alone. Similarly, an adult struggling with focus due to untreated depression will not benefit from stimulant medication alone.

The Gut-Brain Connection and Its Role in ADHD: What We Know in 2025

In recent years, the gut-brain connection has gained significant attention in the world of mental health, and 2025 is no exception. Emerging research suggests that the gut microbiome—the diverse community of microorganisms living in our digestive tract—may play a pivotal role in neurodevelopmental conditions, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

            1. Understanding the Gut-Brain Connection

Gut-brain communication links the central nervous system with the gastrointestinal tract. This connection operates through neural pathways, hormones, and immune system responses. It’s now well-established that gut health can influence brain function, affecting mood, cognition, and behavior.

           2. The Microbiome's Influence on ADHD

Recent studies indicate that individuals with ADHD often have distinct gut microbiota profiles compared to those without the disorder. Research published in Frontiers in Psychiatry (2024) found that certain bacterial strains, such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, may impact neurotransmitter activity, including dopamine and serotonin—both crucial in ADHD symptom regulation.

           3. Diet, Inflammation, and Symptom Management

Diet plays a significant role in shaping the gut microbiome. High-sugar, low-fiber diets commonly linked to ADHD symptoms can contribute to gut dysbiosis (an imbalance in gut bacteria), potentially exacerbating attention and behavioral issues. Anti-inflammatory diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acids have shown promise in supporting cognitive health.

A 2025 review in The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry highlights that reducing processed foods and incorporating prebiotics and probiotics may help manage ADHD symptoms. While not a standalone treatment, these dietary interventions can complement traditional therapies.

           4. Probiotics and Prebiotics in ADHD Research

Probiotics (beneficial bacteria) and prebiotics (compounds that feed good bacteria) are at the forefront of ADHD-related gut health research. Clinical trials published in Nutritional Neuroscience (2025) suggest that probiotic supplementation may improve attention span and reduce hyperactivity in some individuals with ADHD, though more extensive studies are needed to confirm these effects.

           Final Thoughts

While the gut-brain connection offers exciting possibilities for understanding and managing ADHD, it’s important to approach these findings with balanced optimism. Gut health interventions should be viewed as complementary to, not replacements for, evidence-based ADHD treatments. As research continues to evolve, integrating nutritional support with traditional therapies could offer more holistic care for individuals with ADHD.

New Year, New Focus: Mental Health Goals for Individuals with ADHD

The start of a new year often brings a sense of renewal and motivation to set goals for personal growth. For individuals with ADHD, creating resolutions tailored to their unique challenges can significantly improve mental health and overall well-being. This year, consider setting actionable goals that prioritize emotional balance, focus, and self-care to thrive in 2025.

         Why ADHD-Specific Goals Matter

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects daily functioning in diverse ways, from managing time and staying organized to regulating emotions. Research highlights that structured routines and realistic goal-setting can help individuals with ADHD improve self-esteem, reduce stress, and enhance productivity (Barkley, 2021). Tailoring resolutions to ADHD-related challenges ensures they are not only achievable but also impactful.

         ADHD-Friendly Goals for 2025

          Implement Time-Blocking

Time management is a common struggle for individuals with ADHD. Try using a time-blocking method, where you schedule specific blocks for tasks, breaks, and relaxation. Tools like visual timers or calendar apps can keep you on track while allowing flexibility.

          Practice Self-Compassion

Living with ADHD can sometimes lead to frustration over missed deadlines or forgotten tasks. Replace self-criticism with self-compassion by acknowledging your efforts and celebrating small wins. Positive reinforcement fosters emotional resilience and motivation.

          Prioritize Sleep Hygiene

Sleep is crucial for emotional regulation and focus, yet many with ADHD struggle to maintain consistent sleep patterns. Create a calming nighttime routine, limit screen time before bed, and use white noise or sleep apps to improve rest.

          Incorporate Physical Activity

Exercise is a proven way to reduce hyperactivity and improve concentration. Activities like swimming, martial arts, or even brisk walks can provide an outlet for excess energy while boosting mood.

          Seek ADHD-Specific Therapy or Coaching

Professional support tailored to ADHD can help you develop coping strategies and navigate challenges effectively. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or ADHD coaching provides tools for managing emotions, improving focus, and fostering accountability.

         Tracking Progress and Staying Flexible

Set small, manageable goals and track them using ADHD-friendly systems, such as habit-tracking apps or bullet journals. Allow room for flexibility
adjust your plans if needed to avoid feeling overwhelmed or discouraged.

           Final Thoughts

This New Year, embrace resolutions that address the unique aspects of ADHD. By focusing on time management, self-care, and professional support, you can create a balanced and fulfilling year. Remember, progress is a journey, and every small step forward counts.

The holiday season is often filled with excitement, celebrations, and endless to-do lists. For individuals with ADD/ADHD, this time of year can present unique challenges

but it can also offer opportunities for growth, connection, and joy when approached with the right strategies.

Challenges of the Holiday Season for Individuals with ADD/ADHD

ADD/ADHD can make it difficult to manage the increased demands of the holidays, such as:

Overwhelm from Social and Sensory Stimuli:

The hustle and bustle of crowded gatherings, bright decorations, and festive music can lead to sensory overload.

           Difficulty with Time Management:

Managing a packed holiday schedule while remembering tasks like shopping, planning, and attending events can feel overwhelming.

           Emotional Dysregulation:

The pressure to meet expectations or the disappointment of unmet ones can amplify feelings of frustration or sadness.

Positive Aspects of the Holidays for ADD/ADHD

Despite these challenges, the holiday season also provides a chance to lean into strengths often associated with ADD/ADHD, such as creativity, enthusiasm, and the ability to hyperfocus on enjoyable activities. Here are some ways to harness these strengths:

           Enjoying Holiday Traditions:

Activities like decorating, cooking, or engaging in fun games can be both stimulating and rewarding.

           Fostering Connection:

Spending time with loved ones can provide emotional grounding and a sense of community, which is vital for mental health.

           Channeling Creativity:

From crafting homemade gifts to organizing unique holiday activities, individuals with ADD/ADHD can shine in bringing innovative ideas to life.

Strategies for a Balanced Holiday Season

Here are a few tips to help individuals with ADD/ADHD navigate the holidays more effectively:

           Plan Ahead:

Use a planner or digital calendar to schedule events and tasks. Break large projects into smaller, manageable steps.

           Set Boundaries:

Limit activities that feel overwhelming and prioritize what matters most to you.

           Take Breaks:

Allow time to recharge during busy days, whether through a quiet moment alone or a calming activity.

           Ask for Help:

Delegate tasks or seek support from friends and family.

While the holiday season may bring unique challenges for individuals with ADD/ADHD, it'

Recognizing National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month

October is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, a time to shine a spotlight on the importance of mental health care and the powerful role screenings play in identifying conditions like depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. Many people may struggle with their mental health without realizing it, but early detection through screening can be a crucial first step toward getting the help they need.

The Importance of Mental Health Screenings

Mental health screenings are simple assessments designed to help individuals identify symptoms of conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. These screenings are often the first step in diagnosis and can be taken online or through a healthcare provider.

Various tools are widely available, including:

             PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9):

A commonly used screening tool for depression, the PHQ-9 asks nine questions that assess the severity of depressive symptoms over the past two weeks. It is often used by clinicians and available online for self-assessment.

             GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7):

This screening tool focuses on symptoms of anxiety, asking seven questions about experiences like worry, nervousness, and restlessness.

             MDQ (Mood Disorder Questionnaire):

The MDQ helps identify potential signs of bipolar disorder by screening for periods of elevated mood or irritability. PTSD Checklist (PCL-5): This screening tool is used to assess symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, asking individuals to reflect on their experiences related to trauma.

MHA (Mental Health America) Online Screening Tools:

Mental Health America offers free, confidential screening tools online for conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. These screenings provide immediate feedback and suggest next steps.

Just as regular physical check-ups are essential for maintaining physical health, mental health screenings offer a valuable opportunity to assess your emotional well-being and catch early warning signs of mental health issues. Left untreated, conditions like depression and anxiety can worsen over time, but early detection opens the door to treatment and recovery.

           Early Detection Can Save Lives

Mental health conditions can manifest gradually, and their symptoms might be mistaken for regular stress or fatigue. Screenings help pinpoint these symptoms early, allowing individuals to seek support before the condition escalates. Whether you choose an in-person assessment with a healthcare provider or a confidential online tool, taking a mental health screening can be an empowering step toward better emotional health.

           Reducing Stigma

One of the biggest obstacles to mental health care is stigma, which often prevents people from seeking help. National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month is a reminder that mental health should be treated as seriously as physical health. There's no shame in getting screened for depression, anxiety, or other conditions

help is available, and it starts with taking that first step.

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and encourage meaningful conversations about mental health. Please help support individuals and families by helping to identify the warning signs of suicide and providing the care needed to prevent such tragedies.

Suicide does not occur without warning. There are often signs, but they can be subtle or easily misunderstood. Being aware of these warning signs is crucial in recognizing when someone may be at risk and in need of support.

           Common Warning Signs of Suicide

Talk of Death or Self-HarmIndividuals at risk may frequently speak about death, dying, or suicide. This could include phrases like 'I wish I were dead' or 'People would be better off without me.' Even indirect comments like, I just can't take it anymore, should not be taken lightly.

           Withdrawal from Loved Ones

Isolation is a common sign. When a person begins distancing themselves from friends, family, and social activities, it may be a signal of emotional distress. This withdrawal can be physical, such as avoiding gatherings, or emotional, where they become uncommunicative or detached.

           Changes in Behavior or Mood

Sudden, drastic changes in mood such as extreme sadness, irritability, or apathy can indicate deeper emotional issues. Similarly, behaviors like reckless driving, substance abuse, or giving away personal belongings might indicate that someone is contemplating suicide.

           Increased Feelings of Hopelessness

When someone expresses feeling trapped, without purpose, or believes that their situation will never improve, it can indicate a risk for suicide. Pay close attention to expressions of hopelessness or helplessness, as these are strong indicators of suicidal thoughts.

           Loss of Interest in Life

A sharp decline in interest in things the person once enjoyed, such as hobbies, work, or relationships, can be a sign. This, along with a noticeable decline in self-care or personal appearance, is a red flag.

           How You Can Help

If you notice these signs in someone, don t hesitate to reach out. Ask them how they are feeling and encourage them to seek professional help. By raising awareness and fostering open dialogue, we can save lives. If you or someone you know is struggling contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for immediate support.

           ADHD News

Meridian Advanced Psychiatry (MAP) has strived to provide specialized medical services in Idaho in particular, addressing the increasing demand for ADHD diagnosis and management. Recognizing a growing need for comprehensive ADHD services supported by effective diagnostic tools, Chief Executive Officer Kyle Ronnau and Chief Business Development Officer Kevin Hulsey set out to improve the clinic's capabilities.

The challenge: Ensuring quality ADHD care across sites

           ADHD diagnosis

often relies heavily on subjective measures like patient self-reports and questionnaires, which when combined with bias from both the patient and clinician, can lead to inaccuracies in diagnosis and treatment plans.

The primary challenge across MAP clinics was the limitations of the ADHD diagnostic tool they were considering using at the time, which fell short in offering comprehensive insights into patient symptoms. It only provided binary "yes" or "no" answers without any clinical context, which stopped clinicians from interpreting and understanding their patient's conditions thoroughly. With many patients attributing a lot of their issues to ADHD before a formal diagnosis, it's becoming increasingly important for clinicians to be able to get unbiased data into their performance.

           Kyle commented:

They've come up with a conclusion that they have ADHD and then their brain fills in the gap.

When you ask questions, like on an ASRS, their brains are quickly saying if I say yes, it's supportive of any ADHD diagnosis, if I say no, it's not. Then they believe it, so I don't think you're getting honest answers out of them, but not on purpose.

Kyle noticed the amount of time his clinicians spent sifting through patients lived experiences to assess their condition, prompting the search for a better solution which gave clinicians confidence in their clinical decision making

           QbTest.

Solution: Integrating QbTest across Meridian Advanced Psychiatry clinics

MAP adopted QbTest to not only objectively measure attention, impulsivity, and activity to get a deeper understanding of its patient's symptoms beyond a simple binary result that alternative tools offered, but to reduce wait times and increase diagnostic confidence in their clinicians.

Integrating QbTest into MAP's diagnostic process involved several steps:

Training and familiarization: Clinicians went through comprehensive training to understand the functionality of QbTest and how to interpret the results.

Process integration: QbTest was seamlessly integrated into the clinic's diagnostic workflow across different sites, making sure that it bolstered existing practices and improved the overall diagnostic accuracy.

Continuous evaluation: The clinic continuously monitored the effectiveness of QbTest, gathering feedback from clinicians and patients.

Outcome: Efficient ADHD pathways across multiple sites

Adopting QbTest into MAP's clinics resulted in a marked improvement in its ability to diagnose and manage ADHD. The tool's comprehensive data allowed clinicians to:

           Make informed clinical decisions

Objective results that support clinical interviews provide a deeper understanding of each patient's condition, leading to more accurate diagnoses. It has reduced the reliance on potentially biased patient self-reports.

Currently, MAP doesn't diagnose or treat patients for ADHD without carrying out a QbTest assessment to corroborate their clinical decisions.

           Kyle said:

At Meridian Advanced Psychiatry, it's our usual practice for all patients to undergo QbTest as part of their comprehensive ADHD treatment plan.

           Consistency across clinics

By implementing QbTest across all MAP clinics, the organization has standardized its ADHD diagnostic process.

This consistency ensures that all patients receive the same high level of care regardless of which clinic they visit as well as demonstrates the impact their service has on symptom change and improvement.

Facilitated further expansion with more clinics

QbTest has helped with MAP expanding with further clinics as policy, procedure, and provider training is consistent across the board.

It has also felt confident in moving forward with the acquisition of an additional nearby clinic which was already using our tool.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. While often associated with children, ADHD is a lifelong condition that can continue to impact individuals into adulthood if left undiagnosed or untreated. At Meridian Advanced Psychiatry (MAP), we offer computerized testing for ADHD/ADD and comprehensive follow-up treatment. Understanding the importance of early diagnosis and effective treatment is crucial in mitigating the long-term side effects associated with this condition.

           The Necessity of Early Diagnosis

One of the most significant challenges with ADHD is that it often goes undiagnosed. Symptoms such as inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity can be mistaken for behavioral issues or personality traits. However, when left unaddressed, these symptoms can lead to substantial difficulties in various aspects of life. For children, undiagnosed ADHD can result in academic struggles, poor social relationships, and low self-esteem. These challenges often follow individuals into adulthood, affecting their ability to maintain employment, relationships, and overall mental health.

Computerized testing for ADHD/ADD, like the services offered at MAP, plays a vital role in the early identification of this condition. These tests are designed to objectively assess cognitive functions and behavioral patterns, providing a clear diagnosis that can guide treatment. The earlier ADHD is identified, the sooner appropriate interventions can be implemented, setting individuals on a path to success and well-being.

           The Risks of Untreated ADHD

The long-term side effects of untreated ADHD can be profound. Without proper management, individuals with ADHD are at an increased risk of developing co-occurring mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The constant struggle to meet daily demands can lead to chronic stress, low self-esteem, and a sense of failure. In adulthood, untreated ADHD often results in job instability, financial difficulties, and strained relationships, contributing to a lower quality of life.

Moreover, the ripple effect of untreated ADHD extends beyond the individual. Families, workplaces, and communities are impacted by the challenges faced by those living with the condition. Early and effective treatment can help mitigate these effects, improving not only the lives of those with ADHD but also those around them.

           The Path Forward

ADHD and Driving: Navigating the Roads Safely

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) significantly impacts driving due to symptoms like inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These can lead to reckless driving, increased traffic violations, and higher accident rates. Research shows that ADHD drivers are more prone to distractions, risk-taking, and errors in judgment, which can result in serious accidents.

           Understanding ADHD's Impact

ADHD affects executive function, impairing the ability to focus, make decisions, and complete tasks. Symptoms such as inattention and impulsivity directly impact driving safety by causing missed road signs, preventable accidents, and risky behaviors.

           Mitigating Risks for ADHD Drivers

ADHD drivers can adopt specific strategies to improve safety on the road:

Limit Distractions: Remove or silence devices, pre-set music playlists, and adjust car settings before driving.

Drive Smart: Plan routes and breaks ahead of time, avoid relying on cruise control, and practice active scanning.

Use Safety Features: Familiarize yourself with car safety features, always wear a seatbelt, and consider driving a manual transmission vehicle.

Seek Support: Family members can help by managing distractions and ensuring consistent medication use for ADHD drivers.

           Support for Teen Drivers

Teenagers with ADHD are at higher risk due to inexperience and underdeveloped executive function. Parental support, educational programs, and extended practice can help them become safer drivers. Structured routines and open communication about ADHD symptoms can further enhance their safety.

           Conclusion

Driving with ADHD presents unique challenges, but with careful planning, medication, and support from loved ones, ADHD drivers can develop safer driving habits. Reducing distractions and leaning on technology and family support are crucial steps toward ensuring road safety for everyone.

Symptom masking in girls

ADHD presents itself differently in boys and girls. ADHD is thought to be under-recognized in girls and women mainly due to symptom masking. Jo mentions that in younger girls, the school reports are less reliable, perhaps owing to the school not noticing symptoms. The girl or the parents, at times, report concerns that the school may be overlooking certain behaviors. Girls typically go under the radar in cases where they do not present with hyperactivity but do with inattention.

An objective ADHD test can help see whether the girl meets the criteria for ADHD.

In a school setting, it can be quite challenging to pick up on signs. We could go and sit in a classroom and observe a girl and not necessarily be picking up any difficulties, but may be able to pick up those better in a Qb [QbTest] setting. Girls work really hard to mask symptoms to fit in socially, so observing them in that social setting might not be helpful.

Five benefits of dating someone with ADHD

            1-minute summary:

All relationships come with their challenges, but the idea that dating someone with ADHD is necessarily more difficult isn't accurate. There are many qualities, such as spontaneity, open-mindedness, and empathy that an ADHD partner can offer in a lasting relationship.

When people talk about dating someone with ADHD, the focus is often on the challenges both partners face. For example, a New York Times article on the subject highlights find coping strategies and show your partner that you're trying as methods to manage the unique challenges the partners may face.

While these techniques can be helpful, the emphasis on the negatives of ADHD relationships often overlook the joy that comes from dating someone neurodiverse. The truth is that people with ADHD have a lot to bring to their relationships, and while there may be unique challenges, there are unique opportunities as well something we've highlighted in a previous about all things ADHD and relationships.

Building confidence, trust, and joy with one's partner means understanding those advantages in a positive light. While every person and relationship is different, here are five potential qualities to keep in mind when dating an ADHD partner.

Disclaimer: Everyone with ADHD experiences the condition differently and uniquely. Moreover, the different subtypes of ADHD (inattentive and/or hyperactive/impulsive) present different symptoms and have produced differing outcomes in studies. This article is a general overview of some of the struggles typically experienced by people with ADHD, but will not be applicable to all people with the condition.

           Creativity and energy

The boundless energy that keeps your partner always on the move can be overwhelming at times. Yet when you understand what motivates your partner, you can start to harness that creative energy in unique new ways. Being open to the fresh perspectives and excitement they can offer can help negate boredom and reignite that spark of excitement vital to any relationship.

           Passion and spontaneity

In one survey of partners to people with ADHD, a zest for life ranked among the top qualities most valued in the relationship. It's not hard to see why people with ADHD can have a tendency to live in the moment, bringing a welcome energy that enervates any activity.

Seeing someone with ADHD can often mean having so many fun date ideas that it's hard to pick! It might be up to the non-ADHD partner to pick from what could be a very long list of choices, but they'll certainly never be bored or run out of things to do together.

           Open-mindedness

Part of treating ADHD involves helping patients understand that their minds work in unique ways compared to the neurotypical population. As such, neurodivergent partners can have an open-mindedness that lends itself well to seeing new perspectives and accepting novel ideas.

Many people with ADHD have experienced feeling different from others because of the way they interpret and react to events. They can be more empathetic to people who have new ideas or interpretations, making them supportive and understanding as a romantic partner.

           Unique perspectives

One often-overlooked symptom of people with ADHD is their tendency to hyperfocus, spending hours at a time fully immersed in a given task that interests them. The time spent in a state of hyperfocus can occasionally pay off partners often see this first-hand when they delve into their significant other's hobbies or interests. All it takes is the right communication an essential part of any relationship.

           Empathy and understanding

Anyone who's ever felt overwhelmed or scattered will find an empathetic ear with their ADHD partner. When it comes to getting things done and thriving with ADHD, sometimes a little empathy goes a long way. A successful relationship built on kindness and understanding can truly thrive with an ADHD partner.

           Building an ADHD relationship

Dating someone with ADHD can lead to some unique challenges, but the same can be said of any relationship. With understanding, communication, and effective treatment, both partners can find themselves in a truly thriving relationship that accounts for their background and experiences.

By educating yourself about ADHD, communicating effectively, and being supportive, you can help your partner manage their condition and live a happy and fulfilling life. Remember to take care of yourself and seek help when you need it. With patience, understanding, and love, you and your partner can overcome any challenge.

Navigating the Shadows: Understanding and Overcoming Depression

In a world that often emphasizes the pursuit of happiness, it is crucial to recognize and address the pervasive issue of depression. Meridian Advanced Psychiatry (MAP) stands as a beacon of hope for those grappling with the shadows of this mental health challenge.

Depression, often misconstrued as mere sadness, is a complex mental health disorder that affects millions worldwide. MAP understands the multifaceted nature of depression, acknowledging that it goes beyond fleeting emotions. At its core, depression involves a persistent and overwhelming sense of despair, often accompanied by a range of physical and cognitive symptoms.

One of the key aspects of MAP's approach is the recognition that depression manifests differently in each individual. Tailoring treatment plans to address the unique needs and experiences of patients is at the forefront of their commitment to mental health care. By offering outpatient services as well as telemedicine, MAP provides a supportive and convenient environment that facilitates recovery while allowing individuals to maintain their daily lives.

Depression can stem from various factors, including genetic predispositions, biochemical imbalances, and life experiences. The team at MAP employs a holistic approach, combining medication management, psychotherapy, and lifestyle interventions to address the root causes of depression. This comprehensive strategy empowers individuals to reclaim control over their lives and build resilience against future challenges.

Moreover, MAP fosters a sense of community and understanding by the creation of a compassionate and empathetic space. Breaking the stigma surrounding depression is a crucial step in fostering a culture where seeking help is not only accepted but encouraged.

The journey to recovery from depression is an ongoing process that requires dedication and collaboration. MAP recognizes that healing extends beyond the clinic walls, encouraging patients to engage in self-care practices and build a robust support system. By empowering individuals to become active participants in their mental health journey, MAP aims to create a lasting impact on the lives of those affected by depression.

Depression is a formidable adversary, but with the right support and resources, it can be overcome.

ADHD

There is a frustrating local and global shortage of three specific ADHD medications. This problem is caused by manufacturing difficulties and the increased global demand. It’s expected that this shortage will continue until late in the year 2024. This shortage is causing serious issues for patients and families who have already experienced a challenging year. Often doctors are advised not to prescribe ADHD medication to new patients and to reserve supplies for those already taking the medications.

The impact of the ADHD medication shortage is widespread. According to ADDitude, 38% of caregivers and adults in the United States had trouble getting their prescription medications in the past year. Some patients are being sent back to specialist services for a change in medication, adding to already long waiting lists and causing even more delays.

This shortage also leads to interruption in treatment for ADHD patients, potentially worsening their symptoms and affecting various aspects of their lives. In some places, the shortage may increase medication prices, adding to the already high healthcare costs.

It is crucial to improve access to ADHD care. Redirecting patients to specialists along with the shift from digital to handwritten prescriptions worsens the problem. Urgent initiatives, such as allowing digital prescription and along with support from pharmacists and for alternative medications are necessary.

The scarcity of ADHD medication reflects broader issues. Regulatory reforms could address shortages, manufacturing challenges, and more to enhance the supply of this crucial treatment. Beyond shortages, challenges persist, including the DEA’s rollback of telehealth rules introduced during the pandemic. Although the temporary extension until December 2024 is a positive step, it doesn’t guarantee a permanent solution for those with ADHD.
